East Jerusalem is Soweto

Prime Minister Olmert of Israel has been suggesting that the assured possible failure of this latest upstart towards piece would mean that Israel will be shunned by the international community for its continued abuse of Palestinians and their refusal to act to stop it.

Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said failure to negotiate a two-state solution with the Palestinians would spell the end of the State of Israel. He warned of a "South African-style struggle" which Israel would lose if a Palestinian state was not established. [BBC 29.11.07]

If only that had been the case in 1968, a year after the 1967 war when it was clear that Israel was there to stay and that the Palestinians were powerless at their hands. I wish that the international community saw Yasser Arafat the same way they saw Nelson Mandela, as the leader of an oppressed people rather than a monster (anyone will recall that Nelson's ANC was involved in plenty of terrorist and violent activity which the International community seems to accept was necessary and right considering that he won the Nobel Peace Prize).

I hope that the apartheid that the Palestinians suffer under is recognized as such. I hope that the their oppression becomes a cause du jour. I hope that people see that Gaza is just a township, such as those were in South Africa. I wish they would see that East Jerusalem is Soweto, the fenced in ghetto that existed in Johannesburg.

But the world will not see it that way, and so Mr. Olmert's comments are just offensive and condescending. To think that he would feign such powerlessness and disfavor in the eyes of the international community, even if only to drum up support for the peace process from his side, is just awful.

Of course, in an ideal world there would be no Palestinian state and there would be no Israel, it would one nation, two people's living side by side working for the development and enrichment of all. Israelis and Palestinians would see each other as brothers and sisters (or at least cousins). But somehow I don't think that's what Ehud meant.

Free at last, free at last..

The heroic civilian President of Pakistan Musharraf (it feels weird to say his name without "General") has announced that he will lift the state of emergency and re instate the constitution... on 16 Dec.

In fact the people of Pakistan will be living under a democratically elected, civilian President with a working constitution and their freedoms restored. And all it took was a coup, 8 years of military rule, thousands detained and tortured, with the world looking on approvingly as one of the few nuclear nations in the world is taken over by the military.

Pakistani's have in the past often approved of the military take over of their country if the civilian government is seen to be acting contrary to the interests of the people. In fact, the military is seen as one of, if not the only, respectable institution in the country (besides perhaps it's religious ones). The military is not only perceived as heroic, it offers something to aspire: The military class among the most well off in the country. The Armed Forces pay well, train well, offer unimaginable perks, and give respect to young men of the country. The officers and top-brass are a class apart even from the high flying IT techs and business moghuls that populate the upscale estates around and outside Karachi and Lahore.

A healthy French speaking Québec in Canada is not only possible. It is a reality

At the Commission Bouchard-Taylor hearings on Monday Louis Bernard claims that only independence for Québec can protect the French language, proposing that because of Québec (and French's) unique status in North America, surrounded on all sides by Anglophones, with Francophones representing less than 2 percent of the population on the Continent. That argument belongs at a debate of the Mouvement Souveraineté Association 40 years ago, at a time when French was under attack and we were powerless to protect it.

30 years after the implementation of our Charter of the French Language, the ultimate assertion of Québécois identity and strength, Montréal is now truly a Francophone meltropole, and province wide the vast majority of immigrant and second generation youth are educated in French, and allophone's as a whole are choosing French more than ever.(table). Business cannot be done without a knowledge of French and where 30 years ago people complained that an inability to speak English made finding a job so difficult, today we hear the same claim from Anglophones and allophones who speak English but not French. The following extract from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's publication, the Courrier demonstrates my point well:

According to the preliminary report released on June 5, French has never been healthier in the “Belle Province.” “The French language is no longer the property of the majority. It has become the language of everyone,” announced the head of the estates-general, Gérald Larose, a former union leader and long-time Quebec separatist. Almost 95 percent of Quebec residents know and use French in their daily activities, up seven percent in just over a decade.
More than 90 percent of the province’s newly arriving pupils are heading straight for French schools, according to Quebec’s education ministry. Then again, their only alternative is to enroll in the private sector. But Bill 101 cannot force these kids to speak French outside of the classroom, yet many continue to babble and scream the language in the school-yards and playgrounds even in Montreal, where immigrants make up almost half of the French school population.
Even the old-time minorities—anglo- and allophones born and bred in Quebec—have adopted the spirit of 101. [UNESCO Courrier July/Aug 01'

The Charter was modified eventually due to Canadian authority and Minority rights campaigners, and it is much better off for it. I think that the Québec has shown that in it's current political state, there is little it can't due. In fact, such pronouncements as those of M. Bernard only hurt the cause because it proposes that all this work to francise and keep francophone is futile and that only some distant dream of a nation can provide results, and so till then just accept it and do nothing to help.

ADQ: Changer le rôle des CÉGEPS

L'ADQ semble se être habillé dans son rôle comme deuxième parti de l'Assemblée Nationale. Apparemment es CÉGEPS sont importants aux adéquistes. L'ADQ a proposé l'abolition des CÉGEPS. Maintenant, il veulent les reformer, et dans la place de la course pre-universitaire là ils voudraient donner la possibilité aux CÉGEPS pour offrir une programme de formation professionnelles. Je sais pas des mérites de cette proposition mais c'est une bonne affiche que l'ADQ a dévoilée un plan raisonnable .

Offer Refused

The CUPE 1970 has rejected the low ball offer of the bosses. They have been on strike since 2 Nov. The employers (UoS and UoR) claimed that this was their final offer. Not so much?

The ballots are counted and the results are in. Striking CUPE 1975 members in Saskatoon and Regina voted 85% to reject the employers' final offer.
The CUPE 1975 negotiating committee says the vote sends a strong message to the employers at both universities to get back to the bargaining table and negotiate a fair agreement. Contract negotiations are scheduled to resume on Friday, November 30, in Regina. [CUPE 1975 27.11.07]

Gaza Forgotten?

The summit at Annapolis in the United States aimed at re-starting the Palestinian-Israeli peace process has one glaring fault that seems to have been ignored as such until yesterday: The summit is unfortunately missing the democratically elected government of the the Gaza strip, the political wing of the militia group Hamas (video from Radio Canada). That means that there are over a million Palestinians without a voice in these negotiations which are aimed at creating a peaceful Palestinian state.

If the talks actually get anywhere and statehood miraculously seems possible within the foreseeable future, will that mean exclusive negotiations with the West Bank and the Fatah led government there? Is Gaza to be left as an isolated enclave left to feed on itself? Gazans have been making their voices heard, let us hope that the leaders listen.

The Politics of Fear in France

Upon his return home from China, not only was Little Nicky Sarkozy greeted with the aftermath of the most violent night of rioting in the suburbs seen yet, but also claims that during his presidential campaign he tried to stir up hatred and fear towards les banlieus and their inhabitants in a plea for votes. That is absolutely true. Besides promising an interesting hodge podge of spending cuts and spending initiatives, Sarkozy portrayed himself as the tough-guy character that France needed to straighten out the suburbs and their unruly inhabitants.

Azouz Begag, ancien ministre délégué à la Promotion de l'égalité des chances, accuse Nicolas Sarkozy d'avoir semé la haine dans les banlieues lors de la campagne présidentielle, dans un entretien au quotidien régional Sud-Ouest.

"Cela fait 25 ans que le feu couve, mais le candidat de l'UMP à l'élection présidentielle a jeté des bidons d'essence sur cette poudrière avec sa sémantique guerrière. Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf has handed over the command of the military in a ceremony in RawalpindiGen Musharraf passed a ceremonial baton to Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kiani at the army's headquarters. In his farewell address, Gen Musharraf said the army was his "life" and he was proud to have been the commander of this "great force". [BBC News 28.11.07]

The problem now is that there is still an oppressed opposition, a state of emergency, and a President with no respect for the law. And the one claim that the opposition really had against him was that he was still in uniform. Well I suppose now he's in the clear to do as he pleases, just as he always has.

La énigme qui face les partis indépendantistes, souverainistes et sécessionnistes est montrée par l'exemple de la Nouvelle Alliance Flamande, qui malgré son poids relativement petit avec 5 députées de 150, ont arrêté la formation d'un nouveau gouvernement dans la Belge.

Exploitant le fait que les cinq sièges de son parti sont indispensables à l'Orange bleue, M. De Wever ne paraît pas vouloir céder un pouce. Il sait que l'incapacité à former un gouvernement fédéral pourrait démontrer, in fine, l'exactitude de ses thèses séparatistes. Il sait surtout, comme l'écrit un chroniqueur flamand, qu'un parti comme le sien a "le choix entre le suicide politique et le retour au radicalisme". NIght Three: It spreads

Despite the best intentions of the French government and their security forces, rioting and vandalism continued for a third night in the northern Parisian suburb of La Tolinette in Villiers le Bel. And it even managed to spread to other areas (something that was avoided the first two nights) south to Toulouse, where smaller acts of violence resulted in a few burnt cars and the library set on fire. This is according to the BBC. I tried Le Monde but all they are reporting is the increased presence of police and deterrents against vandals, giving the impression that they had succeeded in stopping the violence.

And not all the youths out tonight are rioters and vandals. Some are simply exercising their right to manifest against a heinous act of violence by the state.

Le Québec perçu d'aillleurs

Dans une lettre publié par un français qui s'est déclaré maudit, Pierre de la Coste s'exprime sur la vu du Québec d'ailleurs. Les Québécois aiment beaucoup les témoignages élogieux des étrangers qui sont venus au Québec, les éditoriaux qui radotent la splendeur de la terre et la société brillante qu'on y trouve. Cela est remplit de louange pour le pays et sa culture merveilleux, mais même des questions à propos du genèse de cette société américaine francophone. Elle explique l'avis de la France:

Côté Français, les choses ne sont pas plus brillantes et baignent dans le malentendu. Beaucoup de mes compatriotes pensent que les Québécois sont des Français retenus en otages dans un pays anglais. Triple erreur, puisque les Québécois ne sont pas des Français, mais forment un peuple américain à part entière; que le Canada n'est pas l'Angleterre; et que les Québécois ne sont plus «prisonniers» ou réellement «opprimés» depuis longtemps, au sein du Canada. Lequel n'est pas «le plus beau pays du monde», mais peut-être «la plus belle zone géographique du monde», à l'identité aussi floue et mystérieuse, pour un maudit cartésien Français, que celle du Québec...

Je savait que c'est comme il est perçu là et il me tanne. Le Québec comme victime d'une maladie s'appelle le Canada. Quelle merde! Le Québec a été toujours une partie intégral du Canada, même comme l'Ontario il était colonie et a souffrent de la mercantilisme et négligence britannique. L'Ontario et le Québec ont réussi avec la création de la Confédération et le concept du gouvernement responsable et représentatif s'est ancré sur les espoirs de la Dominion canadienne. Et plus, les québécois ont déjà décidé de rester au sein du Canada 2 fois.

Et sur la concept de nation:

Oui, elle a tout d'une capitale, sauf l'essentiel: un gouvernement et des corps constitués souverains, une couronne d'ambassades étrangères la reliant aux autres États du monde; quelques pelotons de soldats montant la garde sous l'uniforme national et saluant leur drapeau. Mais non, l'uniforme du célèbre 22e Royal est rouge, il a le français comme langue de travail, comme devise «Je me souviens» et la Reine d'Angleterre et du Canada comme colonel en chef. Comment comprendre? L'explication de cette énigme ou de ces contradictions n'est pas loin.
...Voici les plaines d'Abraham. Eh! Je ne savais pas qu'elles étaient si proches.

C'est un peu comme si la morne plaine de Waterloo occupait la place des Champs-Élysées... Alors que les Français, eux, peuvent voir défiler leur armée sur les Champs tous les 14 juillet et filer quand ils le veulent, par le tunnel sous la Manche, admirer la relève de la garde devant Buckingham Palace!

Trop loin, je dois dire. Je perçoive pas les pleines d'Abraham comme ça (même si chu pas franco ni anglo), symbole éternel de défait et honte. Ils sont un souvenir de l'histoire, une histoire pas souvent miséricordieux ni juste, mais une que les Québécois acceptent est au couer de leur société.

Comment comprendre mes amis, hauts fonctionnaires fédéraux, qui travaillent à Ottawa, mais viennent dormir le soir à Gatineau, c'est-à-dire au Québec? Ces soi-disant fédéralistes dont les yeux s'humectent à la seule évocation du Général de Gaulle, voire de René Lévesque...

Comment comprendre M. La Coste, qui croit que les québécois qui travaillent pour le gouvernement fédéral sont participants dans une grande trahison, même sont les fédéralistes qui appuient la situation politique courante? Un boulot est un boulot, et pour appuyer le système qui t'as servi ben toutes ces années, ce n'est pas déloyauté, c'est un avis valide.

VILLIERS-LE-BEL, France (Reuters) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy has summoned senior ministers to a security meeting on Wednesday after around 80 police were injured in a second night of violence in Paris suburbs.

Rioters pelted police with stones, petrol bombs and firecrackers during several hours of skirmishes in Villiers and nearby areas overnight. Police replied with tear gas and rubber bullets, and made five arrests. [Reuters 27.11.07]

Ontario and Québec come out against electoral reform together. But why?

Premiers Charest and McGuinty seem to be getting closer these days as everyone will have already noticed i'm sure. Then again, tough times will do that to governments, make friends out of enemies and enemies out of friends. The two governments of Canada's two biggest and most industrialised provinces in the country have already joined forces to call for aid from Ottawa for their ailing manufacturing sectors. And today, they are declaring together their their oposition to the Constitution Act, 2007 (Democratic representation)/ Bill C-22.

Charest and McGuinty have reason to be worried one supposes, less members for their population. However as they stand together to say no to the reduction of their weight relative to their size, are they also objecting to the increasing of the West's representation. Granted that this is perhaps not the best way to do it, do the gentlemen not think that the House must be reformed?Both Premiers claim that the reform will make them less represented, however it is only for Ontario that this is unfair.

They claim see eye to eye on this issue, but I don't see how: Québec is already over-represented with the addition of 5 extra seats via the 1867 minimum requirement, as all the other provinces besides Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario. Why don't the latter three get together, propose a reform that gets rid of or at least reduced the disruptive impact of the minimum seat requirements from the 1867 Constitution and say ''this is a House of Commons, and despite what the little guys, and Québec want, it should be representative of the demographics of the nation. To ensure the rights of the little guys, why don't we also reform the Senate and give everyone an equal number in there. And Québec, well they can just deal".

And Québec can deal. Ottawa has bent over backwards to accommodate la belle province, why can't Québecer's, so fiercely democratic in their nature, give their support to reforms that make for a more free and representative Canada. Especially M. Charest, who's party claims to: ''Continuer d'améliorer le fonctionnement du fédéralisme canadien''(Engagement numéro 29 dans la programme du Parti Libéral du Québec 2006).

Place the environment at the forefront of Canada's leadership example

Canada is certainly not at the forefront in the fight against climate change, but I hardly think that it deserves to be singled out. However, the point is made, Canada's GDP and humand development index level keep climbing, and whether or not it is fair to all those agriculture and service and industrial workers, the major force behind Canada's economic growth is the harvesting of natural resources especially oil. Now, considering that Canada is home to over 1/3 of the world's oil supply, it can't be expected that the country not take advantage of the natural resources available to it. That makes it all the more important that Canada work to help heal the planet and prevent further damage, as it is profiting so nicely from it's destruction. And besides that, Canada has been a World leader in positive change since World War II and before, this remit must now include protection of the environment.

En matière de développement humain, le Canada gagne deux places et se classe en quatrième position, selon le dernier rapport de l'ONU sur le développement humain.

Cependant, le même rapport qualifie le Canada de mauvais exemple en matière de lutte contre les changements climatiques. Le document souligne qu'il y a un décalage important entre les objectifs et les résultats obtenus au Canada.[Radio Canada 27.11.07]

Divorcé de la réalité

À mes expériences les immigrants qui parlent pas français trouve la recherche d'emploi très difficile même s'ils parlent l'anglais. Les témoignages à Côte des Neiges des anglophones du sud d'Asie perçoivent que leur incapacité en français est le plus grand problème dans la chasse pour le boulot.

Le sociologue Jean Renaud de l'Université de Montréal a d'ailleurs présenté des conclusions d'études qui en ont étonné plusieurs. Présentant des enquêtes qu'il a menées sur la question de l'immigration, M. Renaud a affirmé que la langue n'est pas un « facteur magique » d'intégration, contrairement aux affirmations de bon nombre de citoyens dans le cadre des forums de la commission Bouchard-Taylor.

Selon lui, le fait qu'un immigrant connaisse le français, ou l'anglais, n'a pas pour effet d'accélérer sa capacité à se trouver du travail facilement. M. Renaud a notamment donné en exemple les Maghrébins, qui parlent français mais qui n'ont pas plus de facilité que les autres immigrants à trouver un emploi. [Radio Canada 26.11.07] rapidement.

Good ideas never catch

Mr. McGuinty met yesterday with Manitoba Premier Gary Doer to discuss new high-tech driver's licences the provinces are working on, which will contain citizenship data and could be used in place of passports at the border. [CBC 26.11.07]

Bravo Harper... (réellement)

Même que je l'aime pas, il faut que je salue le Premier Ministre M. Stephen Harper et le gouvernement du Canada pour la provision des quelque 40 000 travailleurs de santé pour aider la lutte contre les maladies infectieuses. Bravo et bon travail, le Canada continue son rôle important comme grand fournisseur des ressources pour les causes humanitaires.

À Dar es-Salam, le Canada lance l'Initiative mondiale pour sauver un million de vies, un programme qui vise à former quelque 40 000 travailleurs de la santé dans la prévention et le traitement des maladies contagieuses. Le gouvernement Harper évalue à 200 000 le nombre de vies qui seront sauvées grâce à la contribution canadienne. [Radio Canada 26.11.07]

Super-capitaliste Nicolas Sarkozy est aux pieds des Chinois pour implorer le gouvernement chinois de réduire la pression sentie par les économies écrasées des pays occidentaux par la politique économique chinois. Les pays industrialisés comme la France et les États-Unis ont acquis une balance commerciale très grande avec la Chine, exacerbée par la valeur fixée de la devise chinoise le yuan. Alors, la plupart des nations du Ouest veulent que la Chine dévalue la yuan pour régler la situation. Donc, Les Communistes de la Chine ont réalisé un rêve socialiste: Pour faire les bourgeoises quémander! Bien sur, les ''communistes'' de la Chine sont pas vraiment communistes ni même socialistes, ils sont dirigeants d'un régime bonapartiste prolétarien, mais, enfin, il faut qu'on accepte les gains quand ils viennent!

Eh ben, il a réussi pour à moins obtenir des accords commercials lucratifs pour la France.

Dans la banlieue parisienne de La Tolinette dans la district de Villier le Bel se trouve dans les flammes à cause de la mort de 2 garçons. Émeutes ont commencé après la collision mortele d'un char policier et les 2 hommes à moto. Plusieurs immeubles ont étés brulés, cela inclut le bureau de police. Les choses irrésolus ont tendance de se répéter. Malheureusement, Sarkozy est en Chine. Mais il va revenir tout suite pour lancer le karcher.

Workers of Canadian Union of Public Employees no. 1975(-01) Unite!

The CUPE 1975 in Saskatchewan have led a 22 day strike, one that has counted more than 2400 workers and has led to disruptions at 2 of the provinces 3 universities (the First Nations University of Canada is apparently not affected). Monday and Tuesday will see votes taken on a deal offered by the bosses.

Unfortunately, the Employer entered into conciliation talks on November 20, 2007 with an offer that was even less than what we had going into conciliation. The Union will be posting and presenting a more detailed response to the employers offer as soon as possible. Details of the vote will also follow. The following are the highlights of their offer:

The lump sum payments which were previously agreed at 5% per year have now been reduced to 4.5% in 2007, 4.75% in 2008 and then back up to 5% in 2009.

Genesis of A Return

Nawaz Sharif, the PM that was deposed by Genral Musharraf in 1999 has finally returned to the county. So yet another opposition, pro-democracy leader coming out of exile and bravely making the journey from the Lahore airport to a near by compound where they will say Alhamdulilah (thanks be to God), denounce Musharraf, plug their party (in this case the Pakistan Muslim League (N) ) and probably within the next few days be detained and hastily released. A plot more formulaic.

Wanted: Immigrants and Energy

The Government of New Brunswick unveiled a few days ago its plan for self-sufficiency (i.e. free from dependency on federal transfers to fund it's operations. The multi-pronged attack favors immigration and the energy sector especially as the keys to economic success while using the key word transform to guide the development of the province into a step by step process of achievable goals and changes.

1.Transform the economy

• Establishment of the province as the energy leader of the Maritimes
• Competitiveness
• Attracting nationals and multi nationals
• The Favoritasion of the development of technology sector
• Improvement and maintenance of essential infrastructure

2.Transform the workforce

• Increase population by 850 000 through immigration and return of New Brunswickers outside the province
• Creation of a well trained well learned workforce through the provincial education system at all levels

3. Transform relationships

• Bring citizens closer to government
• Respect First Nations
• Reach out to other provinces, nations and Government of Canada in ways that promote self sufficiency

4.Transform the Government

• Orient public services towards enterprises and people
• Reform local government to make it effective and representative

Nothing shocking in the program, however it should be noted that the ways in which each province seems to think that they can achieve economic success are the same: Immigration and Energy. Is the future of Canada and its constituent parts dependent on the volition of others relocate there and the volatile world energy market?

Harper the Pariah

Harper finds himself out in the cold on global warming at the Commonwealth summit in Uganda. The only other country to display such rogue attitudes towards climate change is Australia, who unfortuantley is not represented at this meeting of heads of state because its Prime Minister was in Australia on Saturday contesting an election which he lost, to someone who promised to remedy their wrong policies on the environment. Too bad that doesn't look like it's going to go the same way in Canada.

For Muslims, Islamic banking is in a word: Awesome. No interest loans, ethical investments, and the security of knowing that your money is in the hands of like-minded and morally similar people. And it is a good thing that industry exists because many Muslims would find themselves at odd with their faith if they were to seek financing for this or that from a Western financial institution: You see, for us, usury, or the charging of interest is sin for both the borrower and lender. So as the economies of the Islamic world begin again their renaissances, countries like Saudi Arabia and Malysia led the Islamic finance industry which is a good thing because credit cards, mortgages, car loans, all out of the reach of practicing Muslims. So they provide an important service, while investing money in Islamic countries with Muslim populations. And Now it seems that even non-Muslims are getting in on it, and the Islamic financing industry has never been stronger.

China has sent some of its best engineers to help the UN-AU mission in Darfur, Western Sudan. This is a step in the right direction for their terrible record in regards to Darfur, being as that they have become principle investors in Sudan's developing oil industry. China's expansion into other African markets now means that it has real power to push for peace, human rights, and the alleviation of poverty. Let us see how things progress.

Bravo Mates

It seems that the long standing Australian conservative-liberal (his terminology not mine, seems almost as strange as the phrase ''Progressive-Conservative) John Howard will soon be out of a job as Australians swung to the left in a political upset rarely seen in there (Howard was in office for 11 years and will only be the second Prime Minister in the Federations history to be ousted in an election).

The politics are not hard to understand. John Howard and his party have lead Australia to be put on par with the United States in regards to climate change and environmental action, and their continued support of the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq has never ceased to draw controversy. Today Australians chose the man who promised to get them out of Iraq and sign onto Kyoto, Mr. Kevin Rudd. Kudos and may this be the beginning of compassionate, respected, and caring Australia: In terms of environment, in terms of democratic reforms, in terms of anti-discrimination, foreign policy, etc.

Empty seat for Gaza at Annapolis

Hamas will not be participating in the summit at Annapolis meant to officialy restart the Middle East peace process and bring about Palestinian statehood within a year. So now it is either pretend a huge elephant isn't MISSING from the room, or exclude Gaza from any of these plans, as it is Hamas that was democratically elected to and does (sort of) govern Gaza. Perhaps the recent spew of funding pledges by Tony Blair (as UN Middle East envoy) for the isolated band of land which competes with Hong Kong and Monaco for most crowded place on Earth will convince Palestinians in Gaza to support the Fatah-led peace process. I really don't see what the Gazans have to loose, other than pride. Is that more important than medicine and running water (things which are currently a luxury there and for more than a year nearly non-existent under a now eased EU-US funding cut)?

University funding in Québec: It is not dégel or perish!

À propos du débat sur le financement des coûts des universités au pays, Harris-Decima, peut-être un peu plus crédible que Ledger ou l'autre (je peux pas me rappeler le nom maintenant). Ils ont demandé aux répondants à leur préférence en matière d'une change de politique de financement (commentaire après en anglais):

Le sondage de la maison Harris/Decima, commandé par l'Association canadienne des professeures et professeurs d'université et la Fédération canadienne des étudiantes et étudiants, révèle que 80 % des répondants souhaitent un gel ou une réduction des droits de scolarité.

Au Québec, la majorité (41 %) des répondants préconisent un gel des droits, alors qu'en Ontario, on privilégie une réduction (53 %). Par ailleurs, c'est au Québec que le plus de répondants préfèrent une hausse des droits (28 %). En Ontario, seulement 5 % des répondants choisissent cette option.[Radio Canada 22.11.07]

These results are very revealing and simply reaffirm the notion that the Ontario university system is in much better shape than the Québec system where a lack of funding for years has led to sub-standard development in sciences and technologies, this under financing (sous-financement) has been justified by the fact that they haven't raised the fees in years. That's bullshit. Almost a billion dollars worth of tax refunds were given out last year by Charest, perhaps next time around some of our money can go towards one of the most important resources this Québec has, it's minds.

No, Not the Commonwealth!!

Ha, this is sort of humourous, the Commonwealth has voted to suspend Pakistan's membership because of Musharraf's violations of human rights and against democracy. Of course, this was used against him in 99' when he seized power, which as is apparent, worked great. Then they tried to threaten Mugabe with it, he's still being a tyrant. Still, if they didn't suspend Pakistan right now I would surely be complaining about that...

Besides, the Commonwealth only really provides special privileges and schemes for member citizens while in the U.K. And i doubt Musharraf will soon be applying for a Working Holiday Makers visa (he's to old to be eligible anyway).

A Winable fight for democracy (is winable a word)

The military junta in Burma continues to oppress public dissent while it's people suffer, and continues its human rights violations. The U.N. has now taken the lead role in negociations there with the government and the process is as one would expect, dragged out and at times seems meaningless The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Burma Ibrahim Gambari explains the current situation, it's current shortcomings and achievements.

Côté positif : "Le processus de dialogue paraît être engagé, même s'il est fragile et réversible. Un ministre chargé de faire la liaison avec Aung San Suu Kyi a été nommé et l'a vue deux fois. Elle a été auto risée à ren contrer les responsables de son parti. J'ai été autorisé à lire une déclaration de la part d'Aung San Suu Kyi. Les autorités ont libéré 2 600 prisonniers, dont 700 religieuses et 50 prisonniers politiques de la Ligue nationale pour la démocratie (LND, le parti d'Aung San Suu Kyi). Le rapporteur spécial pour les droits de l'homme, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, a pu y aller. Le Comité international de la Croix-Rouge est, en principe, invité à y retourner et à voir les détenus. Plusieurs fonctionnaires de l'ONU s'y sont également rendus et nous avons un accord de principe pour l'installation d'un bureau de liaison du secrétaire général de l'ONU à Rangoun."

Côté négatif : "Aung San Suu Kyi est toujours en détention, de même que les autres prisonniers politiques dont nous ignorons le nombre. On fait état de nouvelles arrestations. Il n'y a aucun calendrier pour la "feuille de route de démocratisation en sept points" du régime et lorsque l'on sait qu'il a fallu quatorze ans pour réaliser le premier point, les pays voisins sont en droit de se poser la question. Employment discrimination in Québec

Lilie Desjardins s'exprime sur le plan radical des jeunes adéquistes pour réduire la taux de bénéficiaires de sécurité de revenu et conclut avec une page dérangeante à propos des pratiques sur l'embauche des employeurs du Québec, décriant une politique discriminatoire qui fait mal pour la société en toute.

Il est de notoriété publique que la discrimination fondée sur le statut social est pratiquée à grande échelle par les employeurs du Québec. Ils tiennent pour acquis que les sans-emploi sont des buveurs de Coke qui écoutent la télé à longueur de journée. La personne sans emploi n'est pas atteinte d'une atrophie du cerveau ni d'une diminution de ses capacités intellectuelles ou physiques. D'autres employeurs exercent de la discrimination directe ou indirecte fondée sur l'âge à l'endroit de personnes qualifiées et expérimentées. Le meilleur exemple en est le gouvernement du Québec qui, dirigé par de vieux politiciens professionnels, a adopté une politique visant à tout prix le rajeunissement de l'administration publique par l'embauche de jeunes au détriment de personnes qualifiées et expérimentées. Son étroitesse d'esprit est telle qu'il oublie que la Caisse de dépôt et le Régime des rentes du Québec, entre autres, ont été bâtis par des personnes d'expérience.[Lilie Desjardins, lettre au Devoir 22.11.07]

If you can't beat 'em, yet...

La participation de partis séparatistes, dans quel que niveau ou endroit, m'avait toujours confondu un peu. La majorité de ces partis maintiennent que les systèmes politiques courants dans leur pays sont:

• a. Pas représentatif de la volition d'un groupe distinct
  
• b. Empêchant la liberté et réussi d'un peuple

et, habituellement dans la plupart de ces questions de l'état-nation, les partis d'indépendance conteste aussi que les gouvernements sont

• c. illégaux

Donc, comment est-ce qu'est ils peuvent se présenter dans les élections, même pour participer dans les organes d'un état qu'ils désiraient les lâcherait. Est-ce que l'hypocrisie et contradiction pas apparent? Peut-être chu trop immature politiquement pour comprendre, mais pour moé, ce paraissait toujours bizarre.

Même que les partis représentent une contradiction pleine, ils réussissent de temps en temps achever, ou à moins avancer, l'indépendance, ou une situation plus acceptable pour leur groupe, comme les nationalistes en l'Irlande du Nord. Et, même, dans les parlements nationaux que beaucoup de peuples ressentent pour les gouverner, il faut toujours qu'on défende les intérêts d'un peuple ou endroit distincte, comme le Bloc nous dit qu'il sert à faire. Ou, un parti peut être complètement inefficace en délivrance de aucune sorte, comme le SNP.

Catholic of Québec: Forgive and Forget

J'espère que les gens qui proposent l'interdit de religion dans l'espace public à cause des erreurs graves commis par l'Église contre la société entendront cet appel pour pardon par l'Achevêque de Québec et Primat du Canada, Marc Oullet.

M’inspirant du geste de Jean-Paul II dont j’ai été témoin à Rome en mars de l’an 2000, j’invite les catholiques à un acte de repentance et de réconciliation. La société québécoise traîne une mémoire blessée dont les mauvais souvenirs bloquent l’accès aux sources vives de son âme et de son identité religieuse. Le temps est venu de faire le point et de prendre un nouveau départ. Des erreurs ont été commises qui ont terni l’image de l’Église et pour lesquelles il faut humblement demander pardon. J’invite les pasteurs et les fidèles à chercher avec moi la manière de reconnaître nos erreurs et nos déficiences, afin d’aider notre société à se réconcilier avec son passé chrétien. Il souligne aussi la tradition judo-chrétien du Québec et son rôle important dans le développement du Québec. Chu d'accord, et je crois que les québécois chrétiens devraient examiner leur passé avec l'Église encore pour vraiment se réconcilier. Il sert personne pour prétendre que l'Église n'existe ni affecte toujours la société québécoise, sa genèse et son avenir.

Today's Sarkowatch finds Nikky too little, too late:

M. Sarkozy decided yesterday that he would open up a formal dialogue with the unions protesting his huge pension cuts (among other things). However that show of good faith did not prevent a dedicated group of activists from setting fires along the different high-speed train routes that traverse the country, causing more delays just as many people had thought service may return to normalcy with beginning of a dialog and M. Sarkozy's urging of people to go back to work in a show of good faith.

The mass arrests following the protests in response to M. Musharraf's declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of the concstitution continue to provoke damnation around the world and thankfuly, today, one person, was released. Well hey, every little bit counts.

The Pakistan opposition politician, Imran Khan, has been released from prison in southern Punjab where he has been held under anti-terrorism laws. [BBC News 21.11.07]

Perhaps if all Pakistani's were international sport stars...

5000 others were released the same day. Let's hope that all are soon freed.

Les États-Unis ont réagi en précisant qu'ils «misent sur les liens avec le Pakistan et le peuple pakistanais» plutôt qu'avec le général Musharraf.

«Musharraf a été un réformateur, mais en décrétant l'état d'urgence, il a agi contre nos intérêts. C'est pour cela que nous lui avons conseillé de rebrousser chemin», a déclaré hier Sean McCormack, porte-parole du secrétariat d'État.

Donc, l'état d'urgence décrié par tout le monde est vu aux États-Unis comme un problème qu'on doit étouffer, de que possible, avant que le problème cause plus de gênes pour les états-unisiens. Pas de tout des gens qui doivent vivre sous Musharraf et son état d'urgence, pas de tout des manifestants arrêtés. Si les intérêts des EU sont menacé, il est prêt pour intervenir diplomatiquement, militairement, quoi que t'as.

Qu'est-ce qu'y s'est passé quand Musharraf a pris le pouvoir?
Qu'est-ce qu'y s'est passé quand Musharraf a utilisé les forces d'état pour écrasser les gens?

Plutôt au Québec que l'Alberta

Le Parti libéral de l'Alberta a tenu deux rencontres, samedi, pour élaborer sa stratégie en vue des prochaines élections provinciales. Les militants se sont réunis à Edmonton et Calgary.

Le chef de la formation politique, Kevin Taft, a affirmé qu'il souhaite mobiliser les membres du parti pour qu'ils soient prêts d'ici le déclenchement des élections. Il a précisé que des candidats libéraux seront choisis pour chacune des 83 circonscriptions de la province d'ici la fin du mois de janvier. [18.20.07 Radio Canada ]

J'espère que les Libéraux albertains réussira pour mieux diriger la province tante dominée par le parti Conservateurs Progressives. Je croyais toujours que le PLA n'a gainé que 4 ou 5 sièges dans l'Assemblée législative mais il semble que les libéraux sont plus nombreux là, 16 sièges, et c'est de 83 sièges. Pas mal, mais j'crois pas que voyions résultats choquantes dans la prochaine élection.

L'américain en chute rapide

Après les grèves du pays, M. Sarkozy se trouve, naturellement on croirait, moins populaire qu'avant. Le dernier sondage a rapporté 56 percent, aujourd'hui 51. Sarkozy réclame le rôle de John III Sabieski*

Toujours coquette dans ses paroles avec musulmans, Sarkozy a réitéré son opposition à l'expansion de l'UE pour inclure la Turquie. À son côté, il croit pas que la Turquie aie une place dans l'Union Européen, à cause des dissimilitudes qu'il perçoit caractériser la relation entre le pays et ceux déjà admis. En plus, selon lui, quand il assume la présidence rotative de l'Union Européen en 2008 , il va appuyer rien que les initiatives qui vont pas aider une accession éventuel du pays.

Alors, malgré que la Turquie fusse pays associé de l'UE depuis 1963, même qu'il avait décidé que la Turquie aura, un jour, quand il est prêt, entrer l'Union Européen par plusieurs régimes successives qui ont suivi l'UE et ses prédécesseurs, oubliez-la. Sarkozy a décidé qu'il va poursuivre, activement, pour prévenir l'accession de la Turquie à L'union Européen.

(John III Sabieski était le Roi élu de la République des Deux Nations qui a dirigé une force pan-européenne à victoire contre l'avance des Ottomans sur la ville de Vienne en 1683. Ça bataille marque la fin de l'expansion ottoman en Europe.)

Saku Koivu dans la soupe

Capitaine des Canadiens Saku Koivu est mêlé encore dans un scandale de politique québécoise, mais cette fois ce n'est pas sa propre faute, sauf que pour commenter sur les différences entre son pays natale et le Québec en matière d'éducation, qui là bas est totalement gratuite (peut-être qu'il devrait suivre un cours de français aussi avec l'anglais).

J'aime ce journal, en fait je l'avais déjà parcouru et vu ce pub sans le lire. Mais en le lisant, c'est clair que ils se sont gaffés, les éditeurs de ce journal. C'est juvénile, et sert seulement à diminuer la crédibilité de l'organisation. C'est ça.

"Saving the country, and anybody else"

That's what General Musharraf claims he is doing with his recent actions. This was just one of the jewels he presented us this morning during an interview on BBC Radio 4's flagship Today program, and even went so far as to say that he is keeping Pakistan and the WORLD safe from terrorists and their attacks, and even mentioned that it is up to him to keep Pakistan's nuclear weapons from getting into terrorist possession.

The interview itself was actually really good. Musharraf and James Naughtie spoke about many issues, from terrorism to diplomacy to civil society and to be frank his arguments were well constructed and even a bit persuasive. He took shoots at those two big thorns in his side and took the opportunity to make it clear that if Bhutto or Maliki make statements that are considered to be threats to public safety and order, the government wouldn't shy away from detaining them. When asked about the recent overtures from Washington, Musharraf responded that American support for him and his régime was ''200 percent''.

The General did spend an excessive amount of time on Benazir Bhutto, but I think that he made some good points. One of the reasons i am so wary of her, and something that many people in the West don't realize that Bhutto is guilty of corruption and misuse of office, and no one disputes that. Her government was dismissed because of corruption and it was probably one of the most legal changes of power Pakistan has seen. Although she have a large number of supporters, but she is hardly the hero of the people of Pakistan, she is simply the loudest voice calling out for change.

Most Canadians would be shocked to learn about the state of housing, health care and education on some reserves, Mr. Bryant told The Canadian Press following a trip to Northern Ontario, where he met with a multitude of aboriginal leaders.

Although his predecessors have traditionally argued reserves are a federal responsibility, Mr. Bryant said Ontario will spearhead a plan to improve living conditions for aboriginal people in communities that are plagued with boil-water advisories, high suicide rates and dilapidated housing.

It's "shocking" that one small reserve in Northern Ontario was recently forced to close its local school and now goes without any educational facility, Mr. Bryant said.

"These are my neighbours," he said in an interview. "There are some [communities] that are actually struggling and enduring socio-economic conditions that are not only unacceptable but would be quite offensive to many Canadians." [Globe and Mail 16.11.07]

Sarkowatch hits closer to home today as the Chief Executive motions that his government will help strengthen the Canadian forces in Afghanistan.

PARIS -- France is looking to step up its efforts in Afghanistan, but will likely stop short of any major commitment to replace Canada's troops in Kandahar, an official said here Thursday. There has been some speculation in the Canadian media suggesting that France might provide relief for countries like Canada, which must decide what role it will play after its current commitment is met in early 2009.

But Frederic Desagneaux, deputy spokesman for French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, sought to lower expectations that the French might relieve the Canadians.

"I wouldn't go as far as that," he told CanWest News Service on the eve of today's meeting here between Mr. Kouchner and Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier. He said France, following through on President Nicolas Sarkozy's commitment to remain fully committed Afghanistan, has already taken steps to increase its involvement. [National Post 15.11.07]

Parce qu'ils ont peur de recevoir des demandes d'accommodements raisonnables, des employeurs québécois refusent d'embaucher des musulmans.

C'est ce qu'a entendu hier la commission Bouchard-Taylor de la bouche de Pierre Dumais, président du Regroupement des gestionnaires en ressources humaines de Laval. «On m'a fait savoir à plusieurs reprises de ne pas embaucher telle ou telle communauté. Ce n'est pas pour mal faire, mais les employeurs ont peur de se faire demander une salle de prière ou d'autres accommodements», a témoigné M. Dumais lors des audiences publiques qui se tenaient à Laval hier.

The feelings evoked by such pronouncements are difficult to deal with. As a person, and as a member of the Muslim community I can still see the complaints and worries people have, and that is fine, and normal. However to openly state that you don't hire people because of their religion, and then to go on and say that your afraid of frivolous lawsuits over whatever issue. Well guess what, it is illegal and it is wrong to deny someone a job because of their religion and you certainly would be tried if you demonstrated such xenophobic practice in real life.

Palestinians must recognise State of Israel

Recently negotiations for Palestinian statehood have been restarted in hopes of some sort of solution being hammered out, not that this doesn't happen just about every year, however, it's still a good sign and anything that improves the humanitarian and legal situation of those suffering is a good thing.

Israeli leader Ehud Olmert has underlined the need for the recognition of Israel as a state and it's right to exist. This is paramount to the discussions, and I think an important step in these discussions. Despite the historical wrongs perpetrated against whomever, Israel was established and exists and I think that it's important to recognise that . Don't try to protect Québec, Duceppe!

As most are already aware, Harper has unveiled his Chamber project to remedy this inequality that exists with representation there. One questions whether it actually qualifies as news (considering that this is the knee-jerk respected automatic response from them), but, the Bloc has fired back with a motion against it, saying they are trying to ''protect'' Québec.

M. Duceppe and other bloquistes claim that they are trying to preserve and advance Québec's interest. This is not true. Québec is a society which prizes democracy and fairness, and it's values should not be invoked to prevent the construction of a more participative and representative democracy. This is not an issue of sovereignty, or of language or culture, and it is not in Québec's interest to curb fair representation. This issue is a Canada wide issue and Québec should not invoke it's distinct status to obstruct reforms to the confederation. The 1980's should have proved that. The House must be reformed and it must be more representative of the Canadian population, whatever that reality is.

This is not Islam

As a Muslim, there's some issues that one will always be hard pressed to discuss. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of those issues. Their despicable treatment of their citizens is so contrary to the teachings of Muhammed (pbuh) and the Quranm, especially in regard to women. I would just like to say that Muslims are just as horrified, if not more, when we hear things like this:

An appeal court in Saudi Arabia has doubled the number of lashes and added a jail sentence as punishment for a woman who was gang-raped. The victim was initially punished for violating laws on segregation of the sexes - she was in an unrelated man's car at the time of the attack. [BBC News 15.11.07]

While we in the West fight for people to understand that Islam is not a religion of hate, theocrats in the Kingdom try use Islam to propogate abhorant and inhuman behaviour. May Allah protect her and shield her heart from hatred against those that have done her so wrong, rapists and government officials.

• General Musharraf has announced, again, that he will step down ,this time "Before 1 December". With the condition that the Supreme Court rules in favour of his presidency. I think we all know better.
• This is after him and Opposition leader Benazir Bhutto called off talks and a proposed investigative commission into a suicide attack on her convoy is rejected by the general.
• However, Musharraf has announced that he will begin steps to open up a dialogue on an interim government. Well he can't work with Bhutto, so perhaps Imran Khan, cricket-hero turned opposition hero?
  
• Well Perhaps he shouldn't have had Imran Khan arrested
• New Interim Prime Minister appointed, called Mohammedmian Soomro! Yahy, this makes a difference? Right? An hand picked powerless figure head. That usually makes for an effective solution...

Dipelling myths about la France ''gréviste''

For those interested in France and the strikes that have paralysed the country over the past two days, the daily news paper Libération features a great article on the reality of the notion of France as a strike-prone or strike-loving country. He notes that in fact France is at the tail end of figures comparing the strike days per year and per worker among industrialised nations, even, he points out, in the Nordic countries, who's social system is often portrayed in France as the key to a peaceful and prosperous society. To break it down, there are three myths regarding France and industrial action, according to this author:

1. That France would be a ''striking'' country
2. That France is more prone to strike than it's European neighbors
3. Strikes in France are characterised by national days of action that serve to paralyse the country and wildly disrupt the economy.

Des Grèves à Montréal

De sourires aujourd'hui quand trouvons les gens de Montréal plus radicalisés qu'on croirait. Presque 20 000 étudiants sont en grève dans l'UQAM, et hier soir presque 97 per cent des employés dans la STM ont voté en faveur d'un grève. Un très bon analysis d'un des deux problèmes contre qui les étudiants uqamiens luttent: la sous-financement et la dégel.

La situation particulière de l'UQAM est symptomatique d'un problème plus large et constitue en ce sens un précédent qui pourrait affecter tous les secteurs de l'éducation. Il est déplorable de penser que le plan de redressement de l'UQAM pourrait bien devenir l'étalon d'un nouveau régime pour les universités de la province. Aussi doit-on s'interroger sur ce qui a poussé l'institution, au-delà du zèle supposé de hauts administrateurs, à s'engager dans des spéculations immobilières entraînant l'université à assumer les risques d'une gestion en PPP de projets publics. Le recours à ce type de scénario irréaliste d'autofinancement ne résulterait-il pas avant tout de l'insuffisance des ressources mises à la disposition des universités?

Dans un climat de surplus budgétaires fédéraux et de baisses d'impôts provinciales, l'intransigeance des mesures imposées par le plan de redressement de l'UQAM laisse perplexe. Chose certaine, pour les étudiants, la gravité du scandale financier dont a fait l'objet l'institution n'a d'égal que la duplicité du discours de la ministre et de son gouvernement. Et pour les travailleurs dans la transport publique, c'est plus simple, ils veulent 3% augmentation de salaire chaque année, les patrons offrent 2.

En tout, c'est un bon signal de la conscience révolutionnaire en développement.

Today on Sarkowatch we find Nicki at home trying to defend his planned overhaul of the French state sector in face of the waves of strikes across all essential sectors in the coming month. As a right-wing candidate, Sarkozy campaigned hard to demonstrate his fiscal responsibility and the courage to shake-up the system, and was elected by a French electorate well used to rhetoric about cutting spending and trimming down the monolithic state bureaucracy while not really being prepared for the effects of such overtures.

Tait-toé Dumont

La phrase ''pétard mouillé'', une qui n'était pas souvent étendu depuis l'élection provinciale de Mars, est la seule à qui je peux penser pour décrire la résolution pour l'abolition des commissions scolaires et son essai de forcer une motion de censure dans l'Assemblée National, même pour contester que les commissions scolaires sont où reste la faute et insuffisances du réseau scolaire. Un stunt flagrant, c'est purement bête, et un bon ouvre pour démontrer le caractère disruptive de M. Dumont et la manque des vrais réponses et solutions pour résoudre les problèmes du pays.

Mais son comportement aujourd'hui m'a rappelé d'un bébé pleurant quand il n'est pas satisfié avec les résultats de réalité, dans cette case, la réalité est que personne est confondu par ses bilans et buts supposés, quand il est apparent que son seul but est pour interrompre le travail parlementaire pour grenier plus d'attention. La réalité est qu'il devrait ben apparent à l'électorat québécois que sa décision pour mettre l'ADQ dans deuxième place dans la chambre n'était pas une très sage.

En matière de performances publiques des chefs des partis, je crois que Mme Marois s'est réussi plus fortement que les autres, et que M. Dumont s'est montré en chute libre, ne plus un homme très charismatique ni attirant, mais un vrai pleurnicheur.

Des accomodoments raisonnables dans l'Ireland du Nord

L'Irlande du Nord, toujours une scène politique intéressant nous donne pas seulement des expériences et exemples d'un autre coin du monde comme les enjeux de réconciliation, accommodation, la réalité de la violence, la religion et la laïcité, la souveraineté et la question nationale. Mais un question qui n'est pas souvent associé à cette belle province est la question linguistique.

Là, il concerne pas seulement la langue irlandaise, mais aussi la langue écossaise d'ulster et même dans respects certains, Shelta, l'utilisée par les travellers irlandais. Le développement d'une communauté irlandophone au nord d'Irlande et le droit de son existence souligné par l'Accord de Belfast, il faut que la langue soit respecté là, mais l'Exécutive et l'Assemblée qui dirige le pays peuvent pas traiter le sujet parce que comme la majorité, par des enjeux qui troublent Ulaidh, le système qui existe évite toute possibilité de résolution parce qu'il faut qu'un projet aie un amont de soutien cross-culturelle qui est fraichement impossible.

SAUF, qu'au niveau local dans les conseils où les enjeux tels contentieux que la politique linguistique peuvent soit traitée parce que là existe majorités efficaces pour adopter législation et, dans quel que cases, donner des accommodements aux autres communautés qui sont pas disponibles dans conseils plus pluriel dans leur composition politique. WHEN Ballymoney Council was asked to provide Irish street names in three villages last week, the vote didn’t pass - perhaps unsurprising in a unionist-dominated council. However, the vote was (I believe) four for and four against, with the mayor - hardline Paisleyite John Finlay and casting vote holder - abstaining. Like Finlay, most of the DUP councillors actually abstained, with only two DUP and two independent unionists voting against the signs. However, the headline on the splash - Baile na mbiogóidí (Town of bigots) - goes beyond ‘whataboutery’. Fighting perceived sectarianism is fair enough - but labelling the entire population of Ballymoney as bigots is counterproductive and just plain stupid. Aujourd'hui trouvons M. Sarkozy à Berlin pour un encontre avec Angela Merkel, la toujours bien aimée, pour discuter d'une meilleure coopération européenne sur l'immigration, en particulier l'immigration clandestine et la flux des immigrants entre frontières ouverts des pays européens. De l'homme qui a proposé examens d'ADN pour les nouveaux arrivants en France, on attendrait des paroles offensives. Mais, non, il semble que maintenant il est le défendeur d'immigration et les droits des immigrants légaux.

Unofficial opposition leader and darling of the worldwide soft pro-democracy set Benazir Bhutto, has announced that negotiations with President Pervez Musharraf over power-sharing have collapsed and that she has walked out. Not that anything of note would have been done or said there, Bhutto and Musharraf have a pretty good relationship considering the circumstances and I can-t imagine it would have been very interesting as neither has something the other is willing to offer, besides the basic promise of a democratically elected Legislative Assembly and a limiting of the state oppression to Islamic Militants and Marxists, but that will happen soon enough anyway. So, back to your business everyone, nothing to see here.

Sarkozy told by the UN to put away his hose

Those who critiscize the debate about reasonable accommodation in Québec, I point to France, who's Prime Minister Nicolas Sarkozy has been accused by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Racism of inciting racism with his latest measures concerning immigrants, namely the introduction of mandatory DNA tests for newcomers especially those claiming family reunification. This is just the latest of measures aimed at persecuting newcomers, while at the same time taking half measures to pretend to promote equal opportunity and access to education for minorities. He's also the same man who as Interior Minister visited a Parisian suburb after a particularly brutal murder there visited to say that he would clean away the scum (he used the word racaille) with a korcher ( a high pressured hose used for graffiti). All we want is for immigrants to learn French before they vote in local elections.

Rural depopulation and deprivation in Labrador highlight government failures

The small island community of Black Tickle in Labrador is a shinning beacon of depravity in what is thought of as one of the world's most developed countries. Lack of transportation, a sewage system, or any sort of economic opportunity in the town means that the residents of Black Tickle are forced to live a degraded existence, while the government of the province and the nation throw their hands up in the air and offer meaningless half-measures and semi-reassurances. I would encourage anyone interested in Canada to read the story about it featured in todays Globe and Mail and reflect on the lack of commitment is shown by the respective governments.

The Liberal and Conservative led governments at both levels have shown continued disregard for the ailing and indeed failing communities of rural Canada and liberals in particular should be ashamed as protection against poverty and the provision of basic services should be the top priority of any Liberal party. This problem is only going to get worse unless there are real steps taken to form an effective strategy to provide for the survival and growth these communities and the giving back of dignity to those who have been forgotten in this first world nation.

Clashes in Somalia

Recent clashes in Somalia continue a nearly twenty year reign of violence and terror for the people of Somalia, and the hundreds of thousands of Somalis living outside the country, either in neighboring countries or in Europe and North America. Somalia has been without a real government (i.e. one that is based in the country and has some semblance of power to enforce laws and order) for almost 2 decades, subjected to the whims of local warlords humanitarian agencies to survive.

Somalia is one country that is truly worthy of the label ''Failed state'' and it does not look like peace is soon to come. There have been numerous start-ups and attempts at establishing some sort of effective government and ending fighting but each time local tensions have erupted into war again. The most succesful government was the one of the Islamic Courts for a few months in Mogadishu, unfortunatly they were deposed, with the approval of the west. Well now again the country is in turmoil and hundreds of thousands are fleeing. How much longer must this go on?

Mulroney sous la loupe

Peut-être pour améliorer son image comme défendeur de transparence au niveau fédéral, M. Stephen Harper a appelé pour un enquête indépendant pour rapporter sur les transactions et accords entre Brian Mulroney et l'oligarch Karlkeinz Shreiber pendant son dernier terme comme Premier Ministre du Canada. Je me questionne si cet enquête peut nous dire rien de nouvelles choses, mais j'ai pas de doute que les deux vont échapper de punition.

Curious George does a trick!

The house arrest order has been lifted on Mme. Bhutto, after continued pressure from the U.S.

Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has been released from house arrest in the capital, Islamabad.The order was imposed early on Friday, blocking Ms Bhutto's attempt to lead a rally against the emergency rule declared by President Pervez Musharraf. The United States had criticised the move saying that she must be "permitted freedom of movement." [BBC News 9.11.07 ]

Thank you Bush. And I think that this, along with his support for Mme. Suu Kyi, is a good example of the United States finally trying to live up to it's assumed role as defender of democracy.

Good for a laugh

Sometimes, just for fun, it's nice to go back and look at the political platforms of different parties and see how they have performed, especially if they are the ones forming the government. The Conservative programme, titled ''Stand Up For Canada'' is filled with the expected posturing and promises, but just an interesting note that the first section in the document is titled ''Standing up for accountability'' These are their goals:

• Reform the financing of federal political parties
• Toughen the Lobbyists Registration Act
• Ban secret donations to political candidates
• Make qualified government appointments.
• Clean up government polling and advertising
• Clean up the procurement of government contracts
• Provide real protection for whistleblowers
• Ensure truth in budgeting with a Parliamentary Budget Authority
• Strengthen the power of the Auditor General
• Strengthen the role of the Ethics Commissioner
• Strengthen Access to Information legislation
• Strengthen auditing and accountability within departments
• Create a Director of Public Prosecutions

Now isn't that a wonderful plan to finally restore Canadian confidence in the political process and clean up Ottawa once and for all. Unfortunately, despite their promises during the 2006 election run-up, they continue to be the defenders of the old system and fervent opponents of transparency and unaccountability.

Bhutto under house arrest

I have no idea why anybody was touting Musharraf for calling elections in February. As I have said, the legislative assembly has almost no power with Musharraf in charge. Now, of course, Mme. Benazir Bhutto has been sentenced to 30 days detention in her home, after trying to leave to go to a demonstration in Islamabad. So, the personification of the political opposition to the regime, along with Chauhdry, has been put under house arrest.

The continued posturing by the United States on this issue is doing nothing to help resolve the crisis. The U.S. took more action with Burma, one of the forgotten places of the world. Of course, Burma doesn't have the strategic importance to the United States that Pakistan does, and Musharraf is certainly more co-operative than the Burmese regime. So, perhaps, the Burmese should start making themselves more useful to the U.S. and then they can get back to unchecked and unnoticed repression.

Alberta and Québec: Partners in Crime?

It has been announced today that Alberta and Québec are the only two provinces in Canada who did not manage to reduce their Co2 emissions. That is shocking to me, as the environmental plan and focus of the the two provinces are so completely different. I have always considered Québec to be a leader in environmental policy, but obviously it's not working. Sorry to say, I am ashamed that Québec is on par with Alberta on any environmental issue.

Dumont en chute

Grâce à la partisanship flagrante de Cyberpresse, présenté à nous sur la une, est un critique de la stature de l'ADQ dans la sphère publique, toujours confié seulement à M. Dumont, démagogue en chef du parti.

Malgré l'élection de 41 députés adéquistes au scrutin de mars dernier, il semble que l'ADQ demeure le parti d'un seul homme dans les médias. C'est du moins ce que conclut Influence communication, qui a mesuré le poids médiatique des politiciens québécois entre le 27 mars et le 8 novembre. [Cyberpresse 8.11.07 ]

C'est la même chose que j'aurais conclu, M. Dumont et son acte n'est plus amusant pour les gens du Québec. Voyez les sondages des semaines précédents, l'ADQ et encore au troisième place, voyez la réaction froid de la publique en vue de son stunt récent à propos des commissions scolaires. J'espère que c'est la commencement d'un grand défait de l'ADQ dans la sphère publique.

Suu Kyi agrees to dialogue with Burmese Generals

Mme. Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma has announced that she is willing to meet with the military generals who have ruled Burma for the best 15 something years and kept her under house arrest for most of them. Kudos to her and I hope that here meetings will be productive and safe.

They'll miss us when we're gone...

Québec continues to lead the Confederation, this time forcing the Federal government to hold some sort of summit or meeting on the crisis provoked by the rise of the dollar, especially in terms of the manufacturing and retail sectors, both important sources of employment and revenue throughout Canada, bu no where more so than in Québec, where the sale of natural resources and manufactured goods continues to suffer as the monetary value of the loonie rises.

This morning, Harper was insistent that nothing would be done yet. Now, at the end of the night, a few hours after Charest called for a meeting of premiers for a discussion of the problem, there is a summit in the works for sometimes soon in order to work this out. So thank you again M. Charest, and for showing the ROC that sometimes our perceived undue influence can result in a good thing :-)

Saskatchewan vote 2007

Il semble que les Saskatchewanais ont décidé que l'équipe conservateur (c'est comme je l'appelle, il me merde pas qu'il s'appelle ''Saskatchewan Party'', à moé, M. Wall et ses sympathisants sont conservateurs, à droite) du Parti Saskatchewan pour diriger la province. Apparemment son stratégie pour favoritiser l'industrie et les municipalités locales dans le cadre de dépense des royautés et impôts, et pour donner plus d'argent dans le paiement de la dette provinciale plutôt que pour un fond pour l'environnement.

J'avais cru que M. Karawacki des Libéraux saskatchwanais s'est représenté et son parti très bien et a offert aux gens de Saskatchewan un bon plan pour prioritiser le système de santé et pour fournir la construction d'un réseau d'infrastructure suffisant, quant à même temps investissant dans la rétention de jeunesse. Le NDP, parti gouvernant de province pour presque 2 décennies se trouve dans l'opposition, pensant si ses bilans et buts pour la Saskatchewan sont encore relevant à la majorité de la province.

Maitres chez-nous? Pas en matière du français

Un enjeu très important à moé est l'apprentissage et maitrise du français dans les écoles. Je suis très occupé avec les fautes que je fais quand j'écris, j'ai honte de mon écriture et j'ai pas des excuses pour lui, je peux seulement résoudre à l'améliorer. En plus, l'apprentissage de la langue me concerne parce que j'étudie pour un jour être enseignent, donc, cet enjeu est bén relevant à moé. Donc, les chiffres suivants sont très concertants, non?

L'apprentissage du français est en difficulté dans les écoles du Québec. C'est ce qu'indiquent les piètres résultats des élèves à l'examen ministériel de production écrite de cinquième secondaire.

Si la majorité d'entre eux l'a réussi en 2006-2007, seulement 43 % des élèves du secteur public, et 65 % de ceux du secteur privé, ont passé son volet orthographique. En clair, un élève sur deux fait plus de 14 fautes dans un texte de 500 mots, même s'il peut consulter un dictionnaire et une grammaire. [Radio Canada 7.11.07]

Choquant. Et les extrait d'écriture des jeunes francophones dans La Presse sont piteux. Je voudrais savoir qu'est-ce que Mme. Courchesne va faire pour améliorer la situation et pour assurer que ces pires résultats soient pas répétés?

On pense à un autre enjeu, et on est appelé au rapport par la ''Commission des États-Généraux sur la situation et l'avenir de la langue française au Québec'' Une langue pour tout le monde, en particulier le troisième chapitre, ''Pour Assurer la Maitrise du Français dans une aménagement linguistique pluriel''. En lire le passage à propos du réseau scolaire anglophone, on trouve la suivante, qui fournit des questions et réponses au problème de rétention des jeunes anglophones au pays.

En confiant l'enseignement du français à des personnes qui ont reçu une formation en enseignement des langues secondes, qui maîtrisent la langue française et qui connaissent le milieu francophone, on crée un environnement propice qui permet aux
jeunes élèves de langue anglaise de se familiariser très tôt avec la langue française et la culture québécoise. L'exode des jeunes diplômés, poussés par leurs insuffisances en langue écrite à
chercher ailleurs un emploi, n'est pas tolérable. On doit s'assurer que les élèves
maîtrisent davantage le français écrit, car cela facilitera l'insertion des jeunes anglophones au marché du travail ainsi que leur participation active à la société québécoise.La formation continue des enseignants en exercice est l'assurance du maintien de leur compétence en français tout au long de leur carrière et d'un apprentissage de la langue commune et officielle de qualité aux membres de la communauté québécoise d'expression anglaise. Comment est-ce que les étudiants peuvent être attendus de maitrise le français écrit si jeunes francophones échouent tellement forts?

Motions of No Confidence: Use Sparingly

In Québec, Opposition leader Mario Dumont Action Démocratique du Québec (a right-wing-autonomist party)has said that he will table a motion of no confidence over M. Charest's refusal to consider his motion for the abolition of Commissions Scholaires in the province. Thankfuly for Québécoise democracy, Mme Marois du PQ has stepped in and said that she and her party will not abstain they will vote AGAINST any sort of motion of confidence and they will not topple the government until they feel it to be in dereliction of running the country.

Not only does this little event underline the little regard Dumont holds for the electorate of Québec, but it also is another leadership for Mme. Marois, who continues, albeit with a reduced speed, on a meteoric ride to popularity in Quebécoise politics.

Saskatchewanais vont aux urnes aujourd'hui

La Saskatchewan vote aujourd'hui pour un nouveau gouvernement provincial pour diriger la province dans cette grande boom qui s'y passe là-bas. Les enjeux du jour sont comment le Saskatchewan peut améliorerions son taux de rétention des jeunes, le construction d'infrastructure basique, et comment bâtir une meilleure service de santé pour le peuple Saskatchewanais, qui est maintenant décrié par les partis d'opposition comme pire au Canada.

En vue de débat, tenu 30 Octobre 2007, fait évident, à moé, que le meilleure parti là, sans égard à mes avis personnels politiques, est le parti libéral, dirigé par M. David Karawacki le charismatique, qui acte comme un bon exemple aux leaders des partis minoritaires en ses attaques. Brad Wall, du Parti Saskatchewan, est un vrai conservateur, et du NPD Lorne Calvert s'est représenté inefficacement. J'espère que les Libéraux vont gagner des sièges mais il semble, selon la dernier sondage, qu'ils ont pas réussi en convaincre l'électorat saskatchewanais que son parti peut gouverner mieux. On va voir...

Justice Suprême évincé du Pakistan, Iftiqaar Chauhdry, personnification présumé du mouvement démocratique au Pakistan, a appelé aux gens pakistanais pour résister le gouvernement dans leur essaie à subjuguer la constitution. Ça fait ben', mais la réalité est que les gens qui se manifestent en public seraient détenus ou blessés ou morts par les forces de sécurité du gouvernement. Ils sont tels courageux pour poursuivre en l'opposer.

PM Brown unveils ''legally binding'' climate change bill

Gordon Brown has, in the Queen's speech today, unveiled a plan for the first legally binding carbon emissions reduction law in the world in the coming parliamentary session. Although Brown announced most of his objectives and priorities when he took office in June, this was a high light of the Queen's speech and surely he'll be sure to point to this proposal as David Cameron continues on his green kick (or perhaps ''green'' issues are here to stay). Interesting if it actually happens though.

You've got to be kidding me: Musharraf to ''resign from military''

I get infuriated every time Musharraf announces that he is going to step down from his post as head of the military AND hold democratic elections. For anyone that's followed Pakistani politics in even the most tenuous way will be well aware of how little such pronouncements mean. Musharraf is such a d-bag. He says this like bi-annually (or is it semi-annually, whichever one is twice a year).

And speaking of the state of emergency, it's not that big of a deal in terms of the bigger picture. Musharraf has been violating the constitution the entire time he has been in office, the temporary suspension of it now isn't so exceptional. Also, democratic elections to elect members of a legislative assembly that is ultimately made subordinate to the President won't help (which is what it has been and will be), although it would be welcomed as there are plenty of political forces from all sides that tend to disrupt the voting process in Pakistan.

Harper in Alberta, again

And today we find Harper, shmoozing it up with Albertans in an oil boom town, talking up conservative ideals and policies. One can't blame him though, they certainly are beneficial to Alberta.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is visiting the West to chat with community, health and business leaders and to wave the Conservative party flag.

The prime minister was to meet behind closed doors Monday in Fort McMurray, Alta., with the mayor, health region chairman and energy industry representatives. [ 5.11.07 CanadaEast]

It just conjures up the worst kind of old boys club, behind-close doors , ''Dallas''-esque political deal. Then again, maybe it's just me.

À gauche, à droite

M. Alain Dubuc, de cyberpresse, conteste que le projet su l'identité est un montre d'un nouvelle virage à droite pour le Parti Québécois. Il écrit:

Le Parti québécois, probablement sans s'en rendre compte, est en train de glisser à droite. Cette dérive est manifeste dans le projet de loi sur la citoyenneté. Pauline Marois serait sans doute blessée du fait que l'on puisse associer son initiative à un virage à droite. Mais le monde a changé, et les définitions de droite et gauche épousent de nouveaux contours, au Québec et ailleurs dans le monde. [4.10.07 Cyberpresse]

Chu pas d'accord. Le PQ est un vrai parti de gauche, et le projet de loi 195 par le parti n'est pas un virage droite, ni un détriment à leur son politique dans les yeux de québécois, ni dans le réalité. Si on regarde son programme de politique, on voit un détermination à la nationalisation, le provision des services de santé et des autres buts gauchistes ont le priorité. Comme il trouve ses racines dans un mouvement nationaliste, le PQ doit être vigilant pour ne pas devenir un parti exclusif ou aliénant. Mais son but curent, pour l'achèvement d'un état québécois et le promotion d'une société francophone n'est pas xénophobe ni isolant aux autres. C'est l'objectif du plan pour promouvoir l'intégration des immigrants, l'amélioration de leur compétences linguistique avant qu'ils peuvent se présenter aux urnes. Est-ce que pour aider des immigrants et promouvoir la cohésion sociale est à droite?

Et toé, Michael?

Très bonne émission de télé publique par TVO cette semaine à propos de la situation du Parti Libéral du Canada, en particulier: M. Dion, via le blogue de Akaash Maharaj ''Idéalisme Pratique'' , qui est en vedette dans le programme pour donner ses opinions à propos du sujet. C'était très informant. Je savait pas que la perception de M. Dion était tante grave que ça, un gars a dit que les Libéraux espère pour le jour que Dion se démissione, malheureusement il n'existe pas un milieu pour l'en forcer à faire. Je croyais toujours qu'il était un bon homme, pas charismatique, pas très fort dans politique mais pas plus ou moins que des autres options. Entrez-vous M. Michael Ignatieff, même inefficace, plus gluant, qui reste a côté de M. Dion dans la Chambre, en espérant pour son départ. On se rappelle des contes de Shakespeare, non?

I was watching the Leafs-Montreal game, and I noticed something. All the Canadiens fans were chanting in English the whole game! So, is Pauline Marois going to make them chant Allez les habs, instead of go habs go? Or a French version of Leaf's suck?
Other questions? Is Pauline Marois going to pay for a PET scan machine for Montreal like Saku Koivu did? Are all Montreal Canadiens fans bilingual? Will the PQ demand the French Language police attend habs games and give tickets out to fans who are chanting only in English? These are important questions, if you are an idiot.

Je sais qu'il voulait souligner sa pointe avec le sarcasme mais en vérité, est-ce que comme le projet est perçu dans le ROC, comme un push à faire tout le monde parler français ici, pour instituer une hégémonie linguistique pour empêcher tous expressions des autres cultures? C'est pas vrai, c'est seulement pour assurer que les nouveaux arrivants qui se présentent à voter sont compétents dans la langue de la société où ils habillent, et pour donner plus des fonds pour assurer le francisation volontaire des immigrants*.

Est-ce qu'est M. Dumont perdant le contròle des adéquists?

Pour ceux qui crient que l'ADQ n'est plus qu'un one-man show, moé inclut, doivent se taire. Hautes fonctionnaires et militants du parti, notablement Président du parti, se prononcent contre le projet de loi pour l'abolition de commission scolaire. Pour quoi est-ce que cet enjeu n'était pas résolu dans le conférence du parti en 2006. Est-ce qu'ils avaient tante peur pour voter contre les idées du grand leader Dieumont. Et, plus intéressant, est-ce qu'est-il entendra?

Aux touts niveaux du gouvernement, au monde entier, les problèmes avec les partis politiques sont nombreux, et ils limitent la démocratie plus souvent que l'aider à se développer. Si un parti n'est plus un regroupement des personnes qui partagent des idées et valeurs similaires, si n'est plus un endroit pour discuter, protester, et ouvrir pour considération des nouvelles idées, c'est merde. Je dis pas que n'y'a pas de rôle pour un leader fort et un programme concrète, mais si ça réfléchit pas la volonté des membres, si les chefs prennent trop pouvoir, ne n'est pas la démocratie.

Liberaux, Bloquistes, Nepédistes, Verts: Unissez pour reussir

Les partis d'opposition à Ottawa sont trop occupés à critiquer et à se quereller pour pouvoir accomplir quoi que ce soit dans le cadre du Parlement minoritaire actuel, a déclaré, vendredi, le premier ministre Stephen Harper [Cyberpresse 3.11.07]

N'est-ce qu'est-il pas un peu tacky pour le premier ministre de quel que pays pour critiquer l'opposition. Mais, il a raison, c'est vrai ils sont pas efficace ni effective pour défendre leur programmes ni les électeurs qui les ont élus. Et ils gaspillent assez temps en se attaquer, ou promouvoir leurs propres buts quand il vaudrait mieux pour s'unir et presente des alternatives communs et raisonnables pour contrer le push à droite que les conservateurs veulent donner au Canada.

Burma: A Question of Human Rights

Continued pressure must be applied to urge the Burmese government to release all prisoners and stop all repression of the courageous mass movements started in Burma over a month ago. The U.S. has lead the call for human rights in Burma, the United Nations has stepped in far too late and meekly to be effective, and now the Burmese government is expelling the Chief U.N diplomat from the country, demonstrating their continued malice and disrespect for international law.

Il faut que nous suivons en presser le gouvernement birmanien pour relâcher tous les prisonnières pris pendant les manifestations de plus d'un mois avant respecter les droits humaines de ses citoyennes en s'abstenant d'empêcher les démonstrations publiques pro-démocraties. Les États-Unis et l'UE ont dirigé l'appel internationale contre leurs attaques contre les droits humaines. L'ONU s'est trompé dans leur rôle de protecteur global. En réponse, le gouvernement birmanien a décidé à expulser les hautes représentatives du mission onusien.

S'il vous plait, contactez vos représentants onusiens et appelez-les à arrêter les attaques du gouvernement brutal du Birmanie, bien reconnu pour son régime de terreur et oppression.

Dernières réactions su la Commision Bouchard-Taylor

En vue la très bonne émission du RDI, s'appelle (très génialement) ''La Commission Bouchard-Taylor'', et pendant ils discute les dernières développements de la consultation publique et les réactions d'ailleurs.

À première, la dévoile d'une déclaration de mécontente vers ladirection dans lequel la Commission poursuit, en particulier les sentiments xénophobes exprimés par un grand nombre des Québécoises ''de souche'' vers les immigrants et communautés culturelles. J'ai même étendu un homme d'un des consultations tenus cette semaine disant qu'il préférait s'associer avec l'identité canadienne plutôt la québécoise à cause des telles expressions de xénophobie dans son propre communauté. Il est très intéressant qu'y a gens qui: a. prend cette commission assez sérieuse qu'ils seraient offensé par qq. comment y émis qu'il questionnerait son identité, et, b. qu'il le ferait assez craintif qu'il considérait se dissocier de son propre nation.

Deuxièmement les émeutes que tels consultations comme lesquels tenu par la Commission Bouchard-Taylor sont jamais un bon idée, et résultent souvent dans plus de confusion et peigne que réponses et discussions ouverts. On se demande si dans cette case, ils ont raison, ou si c'est un exemple de la société distincte ayant besoin de faire comme ils jugent mieux, et dans Québec y'a un tradition de tels rencontres démocratiques pour discuter des enjeux.
