Culture does not = Islam
Salaam Aleikum wr wb,Just wanted to say:Shalwar Kameez is not necessarily Islamic dress. Even if we double the Indian governements report of 15% MUslim, to 30 percent, that's 700 million non musims. Compared then to the 80 percent of Bangladesh who is Muslim and the rougly 90 percent of Pakistan, that's at most, 650 million. So, as shalwar kameez, kurta, whatever, is seen as the South Asian dress of choice, more Hindus are wearing it than are Muslims. Of course , shalwar kameez and other S. Asian traditional clothing can and often do comply to Islamic standards of dress, they are not in themselves clothes of Islam. I'm just sick of hearing people say "ohh yeah so i went and got some nice Islaimc clothese" or the like, when they are referring to South Asian dress.
And i'm generally sick of Islamo-centric people who basically will distort and statistic and make any stereotype in an attempt to make Islam look like the best. Okay, we know we're the best, you're just making us looks stupid by trying to prove it with unresearched, stupid theories. Just saying.
And last but not least, please stop using "Brown" as a synonym for Muslims. The subcontinent, like I just said, is at least half non-MUslim, so all Brown people are not Muslims, and not all non-Asians are non-Muslims. And also, by the way everyone, just because Pakistan is a Muslim nation, mashAllah, does not mean that every aspect or beliefe commonly held by those people are automatically Islamic.
Certainly, South Asia has a long Islamic history and it has been since the early days of Islam a beacon, a place where Islam flourished and so greatly impacted and changed a society that was already thousands of years old. I am not doubting the glory of Islamic South Asia, the power, the influence, or that Islam huge in South Asia. I am just sick of some South Asians, often my age, first or second generation, venerating Asia and their Asianess as automatically making them good, in fact better Muslims than the rest of us. That's all. And to be sure, اردو میری پیاری زبان ھے. Of course, it still needs to be said:
CULTURE is not = to Islam
